Ascension Day

Today we commemorate Jesus Christ’s ascension into heaven (as per Christian belief) by celebrating Ascension Day.

Known by multiple names — The Feast of the Ascension, The Ascension of Jesus, Ascension Thursday, Holy Thursday, or Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord — this holiday is important to Christians because it shows Jesus really had overcome death — he wasn’t just resurrected to die again, but to live forever.

To honor the holiday we are showcasing work by American artist Frank Mason. Mason has been described as the artist who carried the torch of realism through Abstract Expressionism. He was a true renaissance man in his humanistic concern for the figure and an artist with the same aesthetic concerns as a seventeenth-century painter.
